Santander Travel Guide: Beaches and When to Go

Santander is the trip I recommend to clients who tell me they want Spain but they don’t actually want the heat. It’s the part of the country most Americans never picture — green hills, dramatic Atlantic coastline, and a refined, quieter version of Spanish beach life that feels more like a well-kept secret than a tourist destination.

Santander came in at No. 4 on Google’s 2025 list of trending travel destinations, the places with the biggest jump in searches from the year before. It was one of four Spanish places in the top 10, with Bilbao at No. 1. This guide covers when to go, what to do, and the details that make Santander worth building a trip around.

Why Santander

Santander is the capital of Cantabria, a region defined by green, mountainous countryside meeting a rugged Atlantic coast — think more Pacific Northwest than Costa del Sol. The city itself has an elegant, understated feel, largely thanks to its history as a summer retreat for Spanish royalty, and it’s built around one of the most beautiful urban bays in the country.

It’s an excellent fit for travelers who want a beach trip without crowds or heat exhaustion, for couples looking for something quieter and more refined than the Costa del Sol, and for repeat Spain visitors who’ve already covered Barcelona and Madrid and want to see a genuinely different side of the country.

When to Go

Summer, specifically July and August, is when Santander is at its best for beach weather, and it draws Spanish vacationers more than international tourists, which keeps the crowds manageable compared to the Mediterranean coast. Spring and early fall are lovely for walking and sightseeing but cooler for swimming — the Atlantic here runs colder than the Mediterranean regardless of season.

Winter is quiet and rainy, in keeping with the region’s greener, wetter climate, and it’s not the best season for a first visit unless you’re specifically drawn to a moody, off-season coastal trip.

What to Do

El Sardinero, Santander’s main beach, is an elegant stretch of sand backed by early-20th-century architecture, and it’s an easy walk from the city center. The Palacio de la Magdalena, the former royal summer residence, sits on its own peninsula with gardens and coastal views, and it’s worth a couple of hours even if you only walk the grounds.

The old town and harbor area are made for wandering and seafood, and Santander’s fish market and surrounding tapas bars are a genuine highlight — this is a city that takes its seafood as seriously as anywhere in Spain. If you have extra time, the nearby beach town of Comillas and the prehistoric Altamira Caves, home to some of the best-preserved cave paintings in the world, both make worthwhile day trips.

Insider Tips

Santander stays noticeably less discovered by American travelers than Bilbao or Barcelona, which means restaurant prices and crowd levels haven’t caught up to the quality of what’s on offer — it’s one of the better remaining values in northern Spain. Pack a light layer even in summer; coastal breezes keep evenings cooler here than travelers expect from Spain.

If you’re combining Santander with Bilbao, the drive or bus ride between the two takes about an hour and a half, making a north-coast Spain itinerary genuinely easy to piece together without much backtracking.

Getting There and Around

Santander has a small regional airport, though many travelers fly into Bilbao and drive or bus the remaining distance. The city center is compact and walkable, with the beach and old town both reachable on foot from most central hotels.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need in Santander?

Two to three days is enough to enjoy the beaches, the old town, and the Palacio de la Magdalena. Add a day if you want to fit in Comillas or the Altamira Caves.

Is Santander good for a beach vacation?

Yes, especially in July and August, though the Atlantic water runs cooler than the Mediterranean. It’s a great fit for travelers who want a beach trip without the heat and crowds of southern Spain.

Can I combine Santander with Bilbao?

Yes, easily — the two cities are about an hour and a half apart by car or bus, making them a natural pairing for a northern Spain itinerary.
