Two of the most popular Caribbean destination wedding regions — a clear, honest comparison to help you decide.
If you are planning a destination wedding in the Caribbean and have not yet committed to a specific country, two destinations almost certainly come up in your research: Cancun in Mexico, and the Dominican Republic (primarily Punta Cana). Both are home to world-class all-inclusive resorts, beautiful beaches, and well-established destination wedding programs. Both are relatively accessible from major US and Canadian airports. Both are genuinely good.
But they are not the same experience. Here is how to tell which one is the right fit for your wedding.
Getting There: Flights and Accessibility
This is often the first practical question, and it matters more than couples sometimes realize for a wedding group.
Cancun is served by Cancun International Airport (CUN), which has direct flights from dozens of US and Canadian cities. It is one of the most well-connected international airport destinations in the Western Hemisphere. If your guests are spread across the US, the odds are good that most of them have a direct or single-stop flight option into Cancun.
Punta Cana (PUJ) is also well-served, with direct flights from major US cities — but the route map is somewhat thinner than Cancun, particularly for guests flying from smaller markets or the western US. For guests on the East Coast, Punta Cana is often extremely convenient. For guests flying from Denver, Dallas, or the Pacific Northwest, Cancun may be the easier connection.
Run a quick flight search for your key guests before you commit to a destination. The practical math matters.
The Beach: Is There a Difference?
Both destinations have beautiful Caribbean beaches. But there are meaningful differences worth knowing.
Cancun has some of the finest, whitest sand in the Caribbean, and the water color in calm conditions is extraordinary — that particular turquoise that looks almost artificial in photos. However, Cancun is also more susceptible to seaweed (sargassum) arrivals during certain months, typically May through October. Many resorts manage this actively and effectively, but it is a factor for outdoor beach ceremonies during the off-season. If you’re concerned about water quality, my full Punta Cana vs. Cancun comparison covers this in detail.
Punta Cana’s beaches are also beautiful — long, palm-fringed, with warm, calm water. The sargassum issue can affect the Dominican Republic as well, though it tends to be less severe and more variable. The beach color is slightly different from Cancun — warm white sand and turquoise water, but without quite the same pale brilliance of Cancun’s most photogenic stretches.
The Resort Landscape
Both destinations have exceptional all-inclusive resort offerings. A few key differences:
Cancun has a stronger concentration of premium luxury properties — Grand Velas, Andaz Mayakoba, Rosewood Mayakoba, and the top-tier Secrets and Excellence properties cluster here. If you want a truly high-end all-inclusive experience, Cancun’s ceiling is higher.
Punta Cana has excellent resorts — Excellence Cap Cana, Hard Rock Hotel Punta Cana, Zoetry Agua, and several strong adults-only options — but the overall luxury tier peaks slightly lower than Cancun’s best properties. The value proposition at mid-tier properties in Punta Cana is often very strong, however.
Destination Experience Beyond the Resort
If your guests are likely to venture beyond the resort for excursions or day trips, Cancun offers significantly more to explore. Cenotes, Mayan ruins (Tulum, Chichen Itza, Coba), the town of Playa del Carmen, and world-class diving in the Mesoamerican Reef are all accessible from Cancun resorts. I’ve covered the best outdoor venue options in Cancun if you want details on ceremony backdrops.
Punta Cana offers some excursion options — whale-watching in season, the colonial zone of Santo Domingo (a longer trip), and some natural parks — but the density and variety of experiences near the resort corridor is less than in Cancun.
For a wedding group that is going to stay close to the resort, this may not matter. For guests who are planning to extend their trip or want to explore, Cancun has more to offer.
My Take
For most North American couples, Cancun has a slight edge in terms of flight accessibility, resort quality ceiling, and destination experience. But Punta Cana is a genuinely excellent wedding destination — particularly for couples with a strong East Coast guest list, for whom it may be the easier and more affordable flight.
The right answer depends on your guests. Where are they flying from? What is the budget ceiling for the room block? Do they want to explore, or are they happy to stay at the resort? Those answers will point clearly in one direction.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the main differences between Cancun and the Dominican Republic for destination weddings?
Cancun has broader flight access from across North America, a higher luxury resort ceiling, and more to explore beyond the resort (cenotes, ruins, Playa del Carmen). The Dominican Republic — primarily Punta Cana — offers excellent resort options with calmer beaches and is often the easier flight for East Coast guests. Both produce beautiful weddings; the right choice depends on where your guests are flying from and your resort priorities.
Is Cancun more expensive than Punta Cana for a destination wedding?
At comparable resort tiers, prices are generally similar between the two destinations. Cancun does have more options at the premium luxury level, which can push costs higher for couples choosing that tier. For mid-range all-inclusive properties, the pricing is competitive. Flight costs — which vary significantly based on where your guests are flying from — often matter more than resort cost differences.
Which destination is easier to get to — Cancun or Punta Cana?
For guests spread across the US and Canada, Cancun typically wins on accessibility — Cancun airport has one of the most robust international route maps in the Western Hemisphere. Punta Cana is more convenient for guests concentrated on the East Coast, where direct flights are plentiful. Run a flight search from your key guests’ home airports before committing to either destination.
